Halloween and Pumpkin Fun!

Build a Pumpkin!

Last year at Wal-Mart I found these plastic pumpkin pieces and I created a spinner and recording sheet to go along with them.  The parts remind me of Mr. Potato Head parts and come with several different noses, mouths, eyes, ears, etc: The game is a two player game.  Player 1 spins the spinner and if the spinner lands on nose the player chooses the nose for the pumpkin.  Then it's the next players turn.  Play continues until the pumpkin is completed.  The kids love this game and the pumpkins turn out so cute!  We take a picture of them with their pumpkins to add to their memory book.  Here's a picture of one of the pumpkins, the spinner, and recording sheets.

When Itchy Witchy Sneezes

We read, When Itchy Witchy Sneezes by Joy Cowley and made a flow map.  The kids did a great job on their illustrations.




Where's My Mummy?

We read, Where's My Mummy? by Carolyn Crimi  This book is one of my all time favorites!!

50's Day Car!
Here's the 50's Day car that I promised I'd take a picture of when I posted my 50's Day activities. My awesome para, Jennifer Fowler made this car for me using foam board, paint and glitter.  I LOVE it!  We take a picture of two kids at a time in the car for their memory books.


This is a picture I forgot to add last week when I shared our Spider activities.  We read, The Silly Willy Spider poem and added it to our poetry journals and illustrated it.

Spiders!

We have been learning about spiders this week.  I love this unit!  I think spiders are so interesting and the kids love learning about them.  I start my unit by finding out what the kids already know about spiders.  The idea for this chart came from the book, Teaching with Intention by Debbie Miller.  I asked the kids what schema they have for spiders and I wrote it on  a  pink post it note and attached it to our chart under Our Schema (what we think we know).  As we learned about spiders we wrote Our New Learning on a green post it note and added it to the Chart.  Sometimes our new learning gets tagged onto our schema (see the green and pink notes that are attached to each other by clicking on the picture to blow it up) and sometimes we find out what we thought we knew is actually a misconception and we move it to the misconceptions box. 

We read our big book, The Very Busy Spider and circled our popcorn words. 



                                We read lots of poems and our favorite one uses our names!

We read, Little Miss Muffet  and created our own rhymes. 
This one says, Little Miss Molly sat on a dolly.

We learned a lot of new vocabulary words during this unit.  One of the words we learned was camouflage.  To check their understanding of the word I gave them a colored spider and they drew a picture in their Science Journals to illustrate the word.




In Math we made a Spider glyph and analyzed and graphed our data.  We turned our Spider glyph into a   headband so that we could wear it when we did our cool Spider Bite experiment.  This experiment helped us find out the answer to the question, How do spiders eat their prey?



We have another science experiment and a few more activities that we are doing tomorrow.  I will post the pictures this weekend.  A lot of the activities and patterns for this unit are featured in my Spiders unit which is on Teachers pay Teachers.


The 50th Day of School!

We had a great day today!  To celebrate the 50th Day of school we had a sock hop, a bubble gum blowing contest, we hula hooped, went bowling in the hallway and had coke floats! 

This is my awesome Kindergarten Team!  I am so blessed to work with so many amazing people.  There are 7 teachers and 7 paras on my team.  (I'm the one in the pink poodle skirt). 

We made a graph to show our favorite activity, had some fun with a 50's number grid, and made records for our memory book.  We also took the kids pictures in our cool 50th day of school car.  I will have to post a picture of our car this weekend.  My battery died and I had to borrow a camera for those pictures.  :(

Monster Fun

Today we had fun with monsters.  We read lots of monster stories and poems.  Leonardo the Terrible Monster was our favorite so we read it twice!  This is one of the poems we read.  This poem is so much fun because it is easy to act out.  We acted scared for the first two lines and then we pretended to "sneak" around the room and yelled,  "Boo!" 



We brainstormed a list of verbs and adjectives for monsters and then we made our own monsters and wrote list poems.

I did a directed drawing lesson on the Smartboard before they started drawing their monsters.


I gave them a 12x18 sheet of white construction paper that was folded in thirds.  They used a black crayon to draw their monsters and then they painted them with watercolors.  We cut them out and glued them on black paper.  They turned out to so cute!  Here are some pictures of some of the monsters and list poems.









 

 

Columbus Day





We had a 3 day week so we spent 2 days learning about Columbus, maps and globes.  We used clay to design ships that would float.    The kids had a great time building their ships and testing them out.  Only four of them were able to get their ships to float.  After they built their ships we tested the buoyancy.  To test the buoyancy we added plastic bears one at a time to see how many bears the ship could hold before it started sinking.   We found out that the boat designs with the highest sides floated the best.





 


Fun on the Farm!

We had so much fun learning about farm animals.  We made a chart to compare and contrast sheep and pigs.






We learned a lot about cows.  As a culmination to our farm animal unit we made our own ice cream in a bag!  The kids were able to see firsthand how matter can change from a liquid to a solid.  MOOOO-velous!  



We read some of our favorite stories, Mrs. Wishy Washy by Joy Cowley, and Who's in the Shed? by Brenda Parkes are great stories for Shared Reading. Who's in the Shed? is a great story for making Predictions based on clues from the story.  




In Reader's Workshop we've been learning that great reader's make connections to stories they read.  This week we read, The Flea's Sneeze and Baachoo!  and compared the stories.

The best hi-light this month was going to Grandparent's Day at my sweet Madison's preschool.  Isn't she adorable!?
