Mental Images and Zoo

This is the lesson that I posted about last year.  We will be doing it this week so I thought I'd go ahead and post it again.   I read the first part of Jack Prelutsky's poem and then stop and have them draw their mental images.
Here's a close up of their cutie patootie dogs.

Then, I read the last part.  They LOVE finding out that it is a crocodile!

Close up of their crocodiles.

This poem is so much fun and it also leads to lots of good discussion and opportunities for inferring!  I will post about that tomorrow and include a fun freebie!

A sweet friend emailed me asking about where I find the books I referenced in my Zoo unit.
Amazon, of course!  These Pebble Plus books are the BEST nonfiction books I've found.   You can click on the picture if you want to check out the book.

Another great poem for Mental Images

  1. I agree. The Pebble books are perfect for first graders. They are around a level I and often can be found in Scholastic school clubs in sets. The Pebble Go site also offers a free trial. (I am not a rep for the company - just a first grade teacher who has found success with their products and my readers.)

Loved your America unit. Thank you.

  4. We did the Sam poem for mental images earlier this year. I love that poem, but I love the Prelutzky poem you mentioned. Thanks for the wonderful idea. :)

  5. I love this idea. However, I don't know how well my kids will do with the drawing. As soon as I try this, with my kinders, I will be blogging about my experience.

  7. Great activity! I did this years ago with a different poem too. The first one will actually go really well with the review of adjectives that I'm doing this week! :)

I have a question about the Pebble books-as I do not own any, but am looking for books to expand my library for next year. Do these books include a glossary, captions, and other non-fiction text features? (other than the photograph and informative writing?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Angie, They have a table of contents, glossary and index. They don't have as many captions as I would like but they are still great! :)

    2. Thanks so much! I started looking into all the different titles and they have so many that would meet our standards (at least for the AT THE MOMENT standards for content... till they change those) This post sparked my brain for an awesome grant idea with these books that I'm working on now (just hoping I can get it finished in time to submit to my district) :) THANKS!! :)

  10. Deanna, the Pebble books ARE great! We just got done with our unit on Space/Planets and purchased the Pebble books for that. The kids could understand so much...they are written at their level. Our animal unity is coming up...might have to check these books out!
