RAWR! Dinosaurs

To View all of the fun filled learning ideas and activities that we did from my DINO unit click HERE  and HERE to see  our charts, pictures and activities.

Here are a few new activities that we did this year....

We read, Can I have a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Dad, Can I please?
and wrote what we would do if we had a T-Rex.

I want a T-Rex so he can take me to the movies.

He would pick me up from school.

He would clean up my room. (I love all the labels she added)

He could help me go to sleep at night.

I want a T-Rex to play ball with me.

Next, we thought about something we really wanted and completed a Persuasive Writing Planning Sheet to help us convince our parents.

You can download a free copy of the writing sheet by clicking HERE

This is a Flow Map for the T-Rex story that we read.  This visual really helps the little ones with retelling.

You can view my dino unit on TPT by clicking on the picture below.
It's on sale now through Wednesday!
Have a happy weekend, y'all!

I'm on Spring Break next week!  Woo-Hoo!!!

More Zoo Fun!

So... I ended up getting sick last week and I missed the last few days of our zoo fun.  :(
These are the activities that the sub got to do with them.  I know the kids had fun but I'm so sad that I missed out!  Note: These pics are from last year.

They made alligator pie and then used interactive writing to write about it.

Yummy!  You know you want a bite.  :)
Independent writing.

Alligators

Pocket chart syllable game.

Follow up center activity.

Hey, hey we're the monkeys.....

Elefun!

All of this stuff and more can be found in my best selling zoo unit.  You can click on the picture below if you would like to check it out.

I am getting so excited about I Teach K this summer!  I would love to see some of you there!
Comment below if you are coming and we will work on planning a dinner get together.
My friend, Kim Adsit will also be presenting (of course).  She is a Pro and has been so great in helping me get started in this next chapter!   So y'all come on and we will all get a special tattoo or something!

Okay...totally kidding about the tattoo!  But we WILL have fun!  :)

Teachers Taking Care of Teachers

Could you imagine losing everything you own?  Your home, your classroom?  Oh.my.word, y'all my heart is breaking for all of the people who were affected by the tornadoes.  Please help take care of these sweet teachers who have lost so much.  You can adopt a classroom and send them any of your extra materials, letters of encouragement or even digital files to help them build up their classroom resources.  Click on the heart above to link up and lend a helping hand and heart!

Mental Images free download

This is such a fun poem!  I love, love it!  It is great for mental images and inferring
(for a beginning lesson).   This poem is from the book,

Oh, No! Where Are My Pants? and Other Disasters: Poems

Lee Bennett Hopkins (Author), Wolf Erlbruch (Illustrator)

I created a response sheet for this poem and My Neighbor's Dog is Purple.  (see yesterday's post).

Just click on the picture to download.

Okay y'all!  Sorry for such a quick post but I am EXHAUSTED and report cards are due this week!!1
Yuck!!!  Raise your hands if you hate report cards as much as I do!!!

Mental Images and Zoo

This is the lesson that I posted about last year.  We will be doing it this week so I thought I'd go ahead and post it again.   I read the first part of Jack Prelutsky's poem and then stop and have them draw their mental images.
Here's a close up of their cutie patootie dogs.

Then, I read the last part.  They LOVE finding out that it is a crocodile!

Close up of their crocodiles.

This poem is so much fun and it also leads to lots of good discussion and opportunities for inferring!  I will post about that tomorrow and include a fun freebie!

A sweet friend emailed me asking about where I find the books I referenced in my Zoo unit.
Amazon, of course!  These Pebble Plus books are the BEST nonfiction books I've found.   You can click on the picture if you want to check out the book.

Another great poem for Mental Images

In LOVE with Heidisongs

Oh, my word y'all!  If you have never seen or heard of Heidi's Sounds Fun Phonics program you must go and check it out!  I have always used her sight word songs and abc songs and last week a sweet friend sent me Heidi's Sounds Fun Phonics dvd and posters and I am in love with them!

If you are looking for a complete program to help your little ones master the 25 primary sound spelling patterns then this is just the thing for you!  And the best thing of all?  (besides cute and fun)  The price!
You can click on the picture above to check it out.
My absolute favorite thing of Heidi's is the Gingerbread Man play that my class does every year.

***Please note:  I am not an affiliate for Heidi so I have nothing to gain by posting this.  I just LOVE her stuff and wanted to share!!!

Zoo Unit Zebras

Aren't these zebras the cutest things ever?

This is a picture of our venn diagram about giraffes and zebras.

Our zebra information chart.

Chit-chat Charts from Tuesday and Wednesday.
I've received a few questions about how I do these so let me see if I can explain it.

When the kids come to school the message skeleton is already written.
We complete the message together as a class during our morning meeting.
This is almost always a review of what has previously been taught so that they have to use their schema to help fill in the chart.

Step 1:  We read the first sentence EXACTLY as it is written.  So before this was filled out completely our reading sounded like this,  "Giraffes       the      t   est   l    m    mal.
Then, the kids help try to decode the message.  As we try out the words they say we ask ourselves,
Does that make sense? (based on our schema),   Does that sound right? (grammar),
Does it look right? (phonics)
This is a great way to get them used to using the Cueing systems when they read!

At the beginning of the year these are much easier and we focus mainly on beginning sounds.  They start getting more difficult as the year progresses to meet the needs of my little sweeties.
Hope that helped clear up any questions you had about them!  If not, leave a comment below and I'll have another go at it!

Thanks so much for visiting my blog!  I really appreciate y'all!
