On Friday we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
To start the lesson I read the book from Rachelle Smith's unit.
We discussed what it would have been like to live in a time when people were treated so unfairly.
Then, I passed around a brown egg and a white egg. We discussed what we noticed about the outside of the eggs. What were the differences? Similarities? (Note: the egg lesson isn't part of Rachelle's unit).
Next, we cracked open the eggs and examined them.
We found out that even though the eggs looked a little different on the outside
they were exactly the same on the inside.
We used this lesson to talk about the importance of treating each other fairly.
It doesn't matter how someone looks on the outside. What matters is what is on the inside.
We used the writing templates from Rachelle's unit to record some important information about Dr. King.
We had fun completing her word search that included some important vocabulary words.
We watched a You Tube video of Dr. King's I Have a Dream speech.
The kids wrote about their dream to make the world a better place.
I have a dream.... that people would love God.
I have a dream.... that everybody would get along.
{I LOVE the BFF's in the speech bubbles ;) }
I have a dream.... that everybody was rich.
I have a dream...that the people will not go hungry.
This one doesn't really make the world a better place but it is just too cute!
I have a dream.... that I would have a baby sister.
Thank you, Dr. King for your courage and determination to help make our world a place where all people are treated equally.

What a great lesson! Thank you for always sharing. :)

Deanna,
ReplyDeleteI think your egg concept is a marvelous and tender way to get to the heart of the matter! Inspiring lesson! I think my first graders will embrace a lesson like this on Tuesday!

I forgot about that egg lesson...I did that last year. I did do potatoes. I had my kiddos pick out their own potatoes (after they named them and examined them closely) We talked about differences on the outside make us special, but we are all the same on the inside. It was a lot of fun and I hope they got the message.

Love the egg lesson and will definitely incorporate it into my MLK lesson next year. Does your school district allow you to post pictures of your students? I would love to have a blog next year, but we are not allowed to post pictures. Our parents even sign a waiver from taking pictures of other students at school functions!
ReplyDeleteThanks again!
Shawna, My school allows it if the parents sign a waiver (which they all did). My kids this year have been in several news papers and on National T.V. so a few pics on here are definitely no big deal. :) I don't ever use their names when I post their pictures though.
DeleteWith the recent tradegy at Sandy Hook, our school now has a closed-door policy. I don't have a school blog, but this would be such a great way for the families to "see" what we're doing at school. Thanks for sharing. I will check into the waivers.
DeleteThis egg lesson is GREAT! I really like the simplicity of the lesson to approach a delicate discussion. Very perfect for first graders! Thanks for sharing :)

First Grade Smiles
I did the egg activity and it was a total FLOP! I have chickens so I brought in a brown egg and asked to trade with someone who has store bought egg. Well, the white egg was bland and runny and mine was bright orangy yellow with a completely clear "white". The even used different colors to color what they saw - HA. So that ended up a lesson on farm fresh eggs and nutrition :) But, later I sent all of the blue eyed kids off the rug. I said I believe brown eyed kids were better and that's the way it is. We talked about it being fair and if color mattered and what to do about this bad new rule. I even had someone refuse -Rosa Parks would be proud. Your dream bubbles turned out great so cute and meaningful.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea of using an egg to show that we are all the same inside. I will have to use this activity when we go back on Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your ideas!

The 2nd Grade Surprise
The egg lesson is the coolest. My 4th graders would have even had fun with that. Especially if I let them each crack their own egg!! I will have to remember that. :-)

ReplyDeleteHi Deanna, this was always my favorite lesson with my preschoolers. They loved it so much! I loved to watch them as the eggs were cracked open just to see the looks on their faces. It was awesome. The writing part is a great addition to the lesson. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
