Fitness in 2014

Last year I wrote this post about my goal to RUN in a 5K Color Run (click on the pick to read it)

I didn't stick with my training schedule (epic fail) and I ended up walking the WHOLE thing.  (boo, hiss)
Thankfully,  I had some friends who walked it with me.
Hope and Cheryl put us all to shame.  They ran WAY ahead of us!

Here we are at the end of the Color Run  Walk.   It was seriously so much fun!!!

This year a bunch of my friends and I have signed up to do the Neon Splash Dash in San Antonio,Texas in March.   I am proclaiming that I am NOT going to wimp out!  I am NOT going to walk!  I am going to RUN!  Y'all I am so out of shape it isn't even funny.  I usually drink at least 8 cans of coke a day and I do not exercise (New Year's goal 2013 was a Bust!!).

So how am I going to accomplish this?

1)  I am going to treat this treadmill like my BFF.  I will actually visit with it each and every day and I will not call it ugly names... I will not call it ugly names.... I will TRY not to call it ugly names.

2.  I can't go cold turkey on Coke.  Let's be honest.  I need a twelve step program.  Seriously addicted.
My name is Deanna and I am a coke addict.  But,  I wrote myself a little motivational note and put it on the Coke box in my refrigerator.  I also didn't open it all the way so that if I'm reaching in I have to think about it for an extra second.  I am proud to say that I am down to only two cokes a day.  One when I first wake up (this is necessary for the well being of everyone in my house.  I am a big GROUCH without my morning caffeine) and one in the evening.

3.  Once again I downloaded the Couch to 5K app and I am determined that I am going to stick with it.

You can click on the pic below if you want to check it out.  It is a free app and it starts you off slow.
A brisk 5 minute walk.  Then you alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of running for a 30 minute workout.  I am not gonna lie.  I'm only on day 3 and it is killing me.  But I know it will get easier the more I do it.  Right?  Please say yes!!!
It helps me to watch HGTV while I'm on the treadmill because time seems to go by a little faster.

4.  I am going to eat healthier.  I've already started pinning healthy recipes on Pinterest.
If y'all have any great recipes or resources (NO FISH... GAH!)  I'd love it if you shared them!

Okay, friends!  So that is my fitness goal for 2014.  I am proclaiming right here that I am going to stick with it.  If I come back here in 2015 and write this exact same post (ahem....see 2013...) y'all kick my butt!

So.... who is joining me in my quest for a Healthier 2014??

  1. I did Couch to 5K last year. I am NOT a runner (or an exerciser at all), but my daughter HAD to have an adult runner with her when she did her 5K in May for Girls on the Run. So, I bit the bullet and trained. I didn't follow it exact but did my best. I ran (and drug her) the entire way and we made it in 45 minutes. Sadly, once the 5K was over, I have done NOTHING since. She is doing it again, so I'm back to training again next week. My vow is to stick with it after...keeping my fingers crossed. I, too, am addicted to a caffeinated product - diet Pepsi. I have to have one in the morning, but I continue drinking them all day. I don't like water much at all. However, I LOVE your note on your Coke box. I think I'm going to have to try that! Good luck to you on your Couch to 5K - I'm sure you can do it! (And good luck on the Coke addiction!)

  2. You should join us on runteacherrun on Facebook! We have a very doable 2014 plan! I just ran my first half marathon last summer 3 days before my 48th birthday. If you had asked me a few years Ago I would have never dreamed I could do this!

  3. I drank my last Diet Coke on Aug 31st. I weaned off it all summer. I absolutely never thought I would do it. It really was the only thing I drank w/ the exception of a glass of water every now & then. I drank @ least 2 - 2 liter bottles a day for my entire adult life. I started the day w/ Diet Coke & ended the day w/ Diet Coke. You can do it! I am so glad I did! Good luck!

  6. Oh my gosh I love you so much. Your post sounds exactly like me. I kind of loved the fish (gag) part. I am trying to eat healthy, too- and I am happy with myself when I do- but I have to get a new mindset to love the food. And the treadmill. And water. :( You will do awesome!!!

  8. Make some WW chili...super easy and delicious! Put the money you were spending on Cokes in a jar and at the end of the race go shopping for something in a smaller size~you'll need it;)
    Good luck, have fun,

  9. I think we could all be healthier in the new year. The couch to 5K app looks like a doable way to get it done. When this baby comes out, I am going to give it a try. I used to run 6 miles per day.

  11. Morning Deanna! (It's morning in South Korea) If you look for me on Pinterest, I created several "Skinny" boards that you can follow (Skinny Main Dishes, Skinny Desserts, etc). My friends and I did WW together and we would pin the healthy recipes that we found. There are some great ones on there! Check out www.skinnytaste.com - everything on that website is amazing. Also, your motivational note is hilarious! Anything I can do to think positive works for me! Good luck! You can do it!

  13. I so hear you on the goals of last year being a bust and not liking fish! GAG! And why do all healthy diets/recipes include fish several times a week? What about us poor souls who can't stomach fish???

  14. I started using C25K last spring and so far I've run 3 5K races. It worked for me. But here's a little tip - Don't preview the training for the day beforehand or you may not be motivated to get started. Just let the workout be a *surprise* once you get started. The day I looked ahead it said, "5 minute brisk walk followed by 20 minutes of running." I nearly quit right then. You will love the Neon Splash Dash. I ran the Electric Run which is similar and LOVED it. :)

Best of luck! You got this, girl!

  16. I used to wake up with Pepsi every morning. I'd also drink one at lunch, after school, and in the evening. I slowly weaned myself off of it though by drinking water and green tea instead. I still miss the bubbly carbonation and the "kick" sometimes, but don't miss the weight that "kicking the habit" helped me lose! Best wishes on your journey! You will feel so much better!

  18. Good morning, Deanna! Happy New Year! I had the pleasure of attending two of your workshops in Vegas a couple of summers ago. I'm in my second year of teaching kinder (14th year of teaching) and I'm not happy with how I run my centers. Would you mind sending me an email explaining how you run your literacy and math centers? I know you have 5 centers and that each center has a tub with 3 activities. Can you tell me about your tubs? For example: my centers are 1. ABC with me 2. Writing/Drama 3. Math/Science 4. Art/Cooking with Parent 5.Listening Center As you can see, they are not all literacy and I want to have two separate center times (literacy and math) How do you organize your tubs (literacy and math please)? I'd appreciate any feedback. My email is jtorres@spreckelsdistrict.org Thank you!

  21. I love your note! I bought a cow that moos every time you open the refrigerator door. This deters me from snacking! I am going to check out that app! Thanks!!

  22. I am so with you on the Coke thing. I drink Cherry Coke Zero and I'm trying to get down to only one a day. Right now I do 2 or 3. I also got a treadmill and was going good on it until the holiday and then....well... you know! Good luck with the 5K thing! Maybe some day....

  23. It's so hard to get back in shape. I'm showing up tomorrow morning for the first day of training for 1/2 marathon. I'm in no condition to do this but "showing up" is the first step.

  24. I HATE running, never have liked it, but have recently started jogging/fast walking with my puppy. I just might have to look at that app.

  25. Hi Deanna,
I have been teaching Kindergarten for 4 years and this year I have been in the process of transitioning to using a Reader's Workshop format. I have been doing a lot reading and have been following your blog for quite awhile. I was wondering if you would mind if I emailed you some questions that I had concerning your RW format, how your day is structured, etc. Thanks!

  26. Oh Deanna,
What a hilarious post!!! I love your writing. Thanks for making me laugh. Girl, I really don't know how you stay so slim and gorgeous if you don't work out!! I'm pretty sure it's your winning personality. Happiness is key! I am working out several times a week and getting ready for Vegas too. I have been travelling and eating cultural foods and enjoying my fireman honey's great cooking for the past almost 4 years. It's time to moderate my love for food! I used to run lots of 5k's but car accident injuries prevented me from running over the last 2 years but I am feeling awesome and ready to get back to it. That app sounds good - I just may need that to get back into the swing of things. See you in Vegas!

  27. Congratulations Deanna on your accomplishment last year and your goal this year. What you may have seen as a fail last year was actually a big step...you were active and having fun with friends!
I started two years ago eating better and training for 5ks. Also a Coke addict I can say it gets better. I now am down to 1 a week when I also used to drink multiple a day. My resolution this year is to run the Diva 1/2 marathon. What has helped is training with a friend. We don't run together, but we are in constant contact on our running days making sure the other finishes.
For healthy recipes try sparks people.com or the book Abs Diet. Both of these helped me get off on the right foot.

  28. Funny post. I had to laugh. I say nasty things to my treadmill too. Have you ever tried Zumba? It's so much fun if you find a good teacher, BTW...I've never met you but maybe someday. I'm a bilingual SLP in the Chgo land area. I was just accepted to present at Frog Street Splash in the summer. Will you be there? (www.manitasinmotion.com)
